Closing Ceremony OKP project "Climate Proof Vietnam"

Attending to the closing ceremony, there were Dr.Vo Tuan Nhan – Deputy Minister of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; Mr. Kees Van Baar – The Dutch Ambassador; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hoang Anh Huy – The rector of HUNRE; Prof.Dr.Huynh Thi Lan Huong – The president of HUNRE council; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Thi Trinh – The vice-rector of HUNRE and nearly 100 scientists, lecturers, professors from the Dutch companies in Vietnam, and representatives of many universities, such as: TU Delft, Twente University, Deltares Company, Haskoning DHV, Thuy Loi University, Institute of Natural Resources and Environment Training.

Dr. Vo Tuan Nhan – Deputy minister of MONRE highly evaluated the positive contributions and results of project. Inspire of challenges, especially the crisis of Covid-19 pandemic, project’s activities were still carried out and basically completed the goals. On behalf of MONRE, Deputy minister Vo Tuan Nhan thanked the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam, NUFFIC, domestic and international partners for always accompanying, supporting and cooperating throughout the project implementation.

The Dutch ambassador, Kees van Baar, held a very inspiring speech in which he reflected on his own water education. He ensured us all that although this project is officially closing, the Netherlands and Vietnam are very strong partners in the field of water and will remain so in the future. These words were repeated by the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MoNRE), Dr. Vo Tuan Nhan.

As TU Delft, Emritus Professor Marcel Stive, who supervised over 15 Vietnamese PhD’s in the field of coastal engineering, was giving a keynote speech. He said that "Education and capacity building need similar time scales to settle, mature and become effective, just like physical ecosystems."

MsC. Khoa Thi Van Le from HUNRE, PhD candidate at Wageningen University & Research, and Dr. Knanh Linh Phanh, from TLU and PhD TU Delft, presented the highlights and personal stories of the past four years. As young teachers at HUNRE, they are happy with the library improvements and the access to international journals, supported by our partner ITC Twente University.

Maarieke Nieuwwendijk, the Vietnam country manager of NUFFIC Global Development gave the closing remarks and reflected on the past days in which she visited both HUNRE and Thuy Loi University and met with many people involved in the OKP project. She expressed her sincere compliments to everybody involved and stated that she has seldom seen such a strong and effective partnership, that is truly based on reciprocity and creating sustainable results.

HUNRE are looking forward to having more and more exciting projects with TU Delft and ITC Twente University in the future!
