Celebrate 50 years of World Environment Day
In 2022, it will be 50 years since the first-ever UN environmental conference was held in Stockholm. Two concrete outcomes of the meeting were the establishment of UNEP and World Environment Day. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the World Environment Day, the Sweden will host WED 2022 on 5 June 2022 in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) under the theme “Only One Earth”.

The slogan “Only One Earth” calls for transformative changes to policies and individual choices towards cleaner, greener and sustainable living in harmony with nature; rational use of natural resources, biodiversity and response to climate change. “Only One Earth” was the motto for the 1972 Stockholm Conference. 50 years on, the motto is as pertinent as ever – this planet is our only home, and humanity must safeguard its finite resources.
“We are proud to host World Environment Day 2022. Sweden invites the countries of the world to participate in the celebrations and to organise activities and events. We want to highlight some of the most urgent environmental issues, as well as a number of Swedish initiatives and our role in international environmental action,” says Minister for Environment and Climate Per Bolund.
The UNEP Executive Director – Mr. Inger Andersen also said that they hoped to see a positive transformation of the world after the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic but they also recognized that they also had to face 3 global crises: Climate change, loss of nature and pollution. The Swedish statement and the theme of WED 2022 putting nature and people at the center of environmental protection – reminds us of the root, importance of environmental protection and create the necessary impetus for global efforts for a better and greener planet
