Strategy on exploitation of marine natural resources and environment protection

In the morning of April 2, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment held a launching ceremony of the Strategy for sustainable exploitation and utilization of marine natural resources and environmental protection until 2020 and vision towards 2030.
The Strategy identifies some objectives until 2020 consisting of step-by-step construction of information technology infrastructure relating to marine natural resources and environment; provision of timely reliable disaster and climate change forecast to assist the socio-economic development of coastal and islands areas.
The Strategy aims to reduce the degradation and depletion of natural resources and the acceleration of marine environment pollution while improving the adaptive capacity to climate change, maintaining the ecological and biological capacity of marine ecosystem to protect marine biodiversity and potential advantages.
Some highlighted objectives in the Strategy are: Improving capacity and management efficiency in the work of inspection and exploitation; Resource use towards sustainability and marine environment protection; Conducting study and survey of marine resources and environment especially in islands and cluster of outpost islands; Increasing the capacity of weather forecast and warning and climate change development; Reasonable exploitation and effective use of marine natural resources and management of marine environment pollution.
According to the Strategy, until 2030, the marine natural resources and environment study is expected to obtain the potentiality of marine natural resources and environment, marine advantages and disadvantages in Vietnamese marine and neighboring marine areas, effective solutions to marine environment pollution, marine resource degradation and depletion and marine biodiversity deterioration.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha stated that the Strategy for sustainable exploitation and utilization of marine natural resources and environmental protection until 2020 and vision towards 2030 approved by Prime Minister provided a foundation for the country’s future plan of sustainable effective exploitation and use of marine resources. In addition, Vice Minister called for related ministries, agencies and international organizations introducing practical measures to achieve Strategy’s objectives in an attempt to turn Vietnam into a strong sea-based economy with low-carbon emission industries and while preserving marine environment.
