“Citizen Science in Water Resources Monitoring”

I. Background

The Nhue River starting from the Lien Mac sluice (Latitude 21005’27” N, Longitude 105046’12” E) in Bac Tu Liem district, Ha Noi city, is a tributary of the Red river and takes on water from the Red River and flows into the Day river at Phu Ly city, Ha Nam province (Figure 1). The total length of the Nhue River is 74 km. The river suffers from pollution, general water shortage, and ecosystem degradation. In addition, Nhue river is located near HUNRE where we carry out some hands-on experiments and practices on practical sites of specialized in Water Resources management major. In addition, the improvement of water resources in Nhue River need to support from local authorities, researchers, organizations, private sectors, etc. in monitoring and controlling waste water of household, handicraft village and industrial zones.

In the DOW leadership in Action Program (LIA), 2017, HUNRE cooperated with PYXERA - Global to boost citizen science mode in water resources monitoring in the Nhue river established since 2015 under the framework of MK27 project. “Inclusive development paths for healthy Red River landscapes based on ecosystem services” that we received a lot of supports from TUDelft and UNESCO-IHE.

II. Objective

The ultimate goal is to increase awareness on the quality of water sources so more people can feel truly engaged with the citizen science program and the number of participants can be increased so greater and more accurate data can be gathered.

The participants should be aware that the data can be ultimately shared with the government and local authorities so more actions can be taken to drive improvements in water used every day by citizens.

III. Project duration:

From May, 2017 to September, 2017

IV.  Scope

Design a marketing and communication plan to help students engage the community in the citizen science program: reporting water levels and water quality so more data can be gathered. The purpose is to be able to expand the number of participants in the citizen science program. In addition, the goal of the communication plan is to provide awareness of the current issues within Hanoi regarding to water pollution. It should also be reviewed what is the best way to capture and share the data in the citizen science program.
