On 31st October, Asia-Pacific regional workshop on the reduction of mercury emission from coal combustion was held at Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE) from 31/10 to 01/11/2019 - this is a sideline conference of the “14th Multi-pollutant Emissions from Coal workshop, MEC 14". Attending the workshop, there are national and international experts, HUNRE staffs, lecturers and students.

View of workshop

The main goal of the Asia-Pacific regional workshop on “the reduction of mercury emission from coal combustion” is to share information and support countries to fulfill their obligations under the Minamata Convention related to emissions of mercury and coal burning, contributing to the protection of human health and the environment. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has warned that mercury pollution is becoming a global problem. In Asia, the rapid economic growth has spurred the growth of industries that use mercury in manufacturing, making the continent the largest source of mercury emissions. Mercury emission in Asia accounts for nearly 50% of the world's mercury emissions. In particular, coal burning is one of the important sources of mercury emission into the environment. That fact needs to be taken into account by policymakers as well as industrial manufacturers of the continent to protect human health.
