Cooperation International Cooperation Conference - Workshop
5th ASIA-PACIFIC COASTAL AQUIFER MANAGEMENT MEETING

5th ASIA-PACIFIC COASTAL AQUIFER MANAGEMENT MEETING

Da Nang, Vietnam, 17-19 July 2017

Overview

A large portion of the world’s population inhabits coastal areas, and puts significant stress on surface and ground water resources. In addition, sea level rise due to climate change is expected to adversely impact coastal systems, in particular, groundwater resources. A UN report showed that by 2050, seven of the ten most vulnerable countries worldwide are in the Asia-Pacific region. In other parts of the globe, groundwater in coastal areas has received much attention from the international scientific community, Government Departments and other ground water stakeholders. However, in the Asia-Pacific region, scientists, engineers and managers who are concerned with coastal groundwater have had few opportunities for specialized forums. To this end, a group of water experts from academia, governments and international organizations with a common interest in the management of coastal aquifers for socio-economic development, has cooperated to initiate the Asia-Pacific Coastal Aquifer Management Meeting (APCAMM), first established in 2009. The main goal of this bi-annual forum is to provide an opportunity for people both locally and from outside the Asia-Pacific region to share knowledge in coastal aquifer water resources and management, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. So far, four APCAMM forums have been held: Bangkok (Thailand, 2009), Jeju Island (Korea, 2011), Beijing (China, 2013) and Cairns (Australia, 2016, a joint meeting with the 24th SWIM).  The next meeting, the fifth APCAMM, will be held in Da Nang, Vietnam in July 17-19, 2017.

More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available. You can also check the website for updated information: http://www.apcamm.net/

Venue

Da Nang is the third largest city in Vietnam and one of the major port cities, in addition to Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong. Situated on the coast, at the mouth of the Han River, it is the biggest city in Central Vietnam. Of the many attractions that belong to the city, the Museum of Cham stands out with its rich collection of Cham artefacts. For those who crave more outdoors activities, My Khe beach is a good place to spend time, either by yourself or with your loved ones. To the North and South ends of the city, Monkey and Marble mountains store some historical and religious symbols. If you want to escape the heat, Ba Na resort is a miniature of Da Lat, only with fewer tourists. Bring some warm clothes if you plan to visit this cottage-full place.

Da Nang is also a place for authentic local cuisines. If you need romance to set the feeling, book a dinner cruise along the Han River. The myriad restaurants option along My Khe Beach, a few outstanding names such as My Hanh, For You…, offer fresh seafood at unbeatable prices.

Da Nang has recently emerged as a luxury and MICE destination that can beat the all-too-famous Nha Trang. Resorts and hotels in Da Nang are listed among the world's most beautiful, offering private beach, world class service and artistically designed villas and rooms. A few names are Furama ResortFusion Maia  and Vinpearl Luxury.

The meeting will take place at the University of Da Nang. It is located in the centre of Da Nang city, about 4 km from Da Nang International Airport.
